The Research Leadership Workbook
This workbook is for those taking on leadership responsibilities for teams and, as evidence suggests, probably feeling daunted by the new demands of leading teams in a research setting. It is based upon the established Future Leader Fellows Development Network (FLFDN) Leadership Retreat, developed by Dr Tracey Stead and Dr Steve Joy.
This resource was created Monica Busse, Rhys Denton and Jonathan Morris on behalf of the “Cardiff University Adapting the UKRI FLF Leadership Retreat to the Cardiff Mid-Career Research Context Project” with Research Culture Funding 2024-25 from MEDR.
Train the Trainer: Leadership Retreats
The Network has developed a successful three-day Leadership Retreat tailored to research fellows who are recruiting and leading their first group. It has run nine times, at venues throughout the UK, and received tremendous feedback from participants. When possible, we are keen to share our materials and insights with colleagues in the sector who are interested in running leadership retreats for new research leaders or fellows.
The Network periodically offers Train the Trainer events, aimed at research-enabling staff sharing our approach to developing leadership in early- and mid-career researchers, an approach we explore in depth during our three-day Leadership Retreat.
Who is the Train the Trainer event for?
This workshop is best suited to experienced facilitators who want to deliver leadership retreats. It offers opportunities for practice-sharing, access to tried-and-tested materials, and a safe space to develop confidence in using them. It will be most valuable if you have experience working with researchers or within the research and innovation environment.
The Train the Trainer event is one of the ways the Network supports FLF host institutions and research enabling staff. It is not part of our standard delivery and is only offered when there is clear demand, available capacity, and alignment with our strategic priorities.
