About the Event


This session will give participants an overview of :

1) The peer review process in general for research councils

2) General research grant assessment criteria used

3) Proposal sections (e.g. abstract, case for support, impact plan etc.)

4) Tips on writing style to improve readability

5) Importance of a lay summary, including examples of lay summaries to be used for discussion in breakouts

6) Importance of the response to peer review including some do’s and don’ts

Prior knowledge:

Introductory to intermediate - no previous knowledge of the topic is required


This event will be carried out virtually , via zoom


1) 10 mins - Introductioninteractive section - including asking the participants of the experiences thus far of writing/submitting standard grant proposals

2) 20 mins - Presentation - peer review process and assessment criteria

3) 15 mins  - ‘Top tips’  - Crafting a good proposal, including the importance of a lay summary

4) 15 mins  - break

5) 15 mins – BreakoutsInteractive lay summaries exercise and discussion

6) 15 mins  - ‘Top tips’ - Responding to peer review
